you will need:

1. Flathead screwdriver

2. Rubber mallet (or a hammer & a rag)

3. Exacto knife

4. Ratchet set (or a pair of pliers)

5. Fasteners & bolts kit (comes with bumper)

6. Very small screw driver (prefferably from the eye-glass repair kit)

First off, jack up the rear of the car and take off the rear wheels.

Take off the bumper strip. You might have to pry it with a screw driver a bit to get it started.

Now you will be able to access all the fasteners.

There's one fastener in each wheel well and 2 fasteners on the bottom of the bumper next to the wheel well, that you have to pop out. Then you have those visible under the bumper strip, that you've removed. And about 6-7 of them on the inside part of the bumper. You would have to crawl underneath the car in order to get them out.

Those things are pretty tuff to remove, but you don't have to worry about breaking them, as you bumper should come with all needed hardware replacements. Just use the knife to cut the tops off, or use the small screw driver to hammer the middle inserts out. Push on them hard enough, and they will just come out on the other side. After they fall out, just pull the fasteners out.

After you've removed all the fastens pull the bumper straight back, and it will just slide off.

Now to the new bumper:

This one has a diffuser on it. DO NOT put the diffuser on at this point, as it will limit the accessibility to the fasteners underneath the bumper.

Slide the new bumper on, while making sure that the groves slide over the side rails of the car frame. Get the NEW fasteners and clip them in. It will require some effort to get the push pins in, but with a help of a rubber mallet or with your finger tips you will eventually get them in.

Do the same thing in the wheel wells and on the bottom of the skirt. Place the fasteners underneath the bumper and you're almost done.

Now take the diffuser and clip it into the bumper. It will require some pushing, as it has to go in about 3/4". You will not hear it click in, but you will see, that each side of the diffuser (underneath the car) has a hole. Once the diffuser is in place, those holes will line up with the holes in the car's body. You should have the clip-on nuts and bolts in your "bumper fastening kit". Clip those nuts onto the body, and then screw in the bolts.

Now replace the bumper strip, put on the wheels, lower the car and enjoy your "new" car.

... and loosened the bolts. We unscrewed the correct bolts. We just couldn't figure out for the life of us how to get the thing off the car! This is where the big bolts hold the entire bumper housing on to the rest of the car. The stuff to the side is really just to hold the sides flush to the bumper. A preview of what the car will look like with body color moulding- sort of. I did have to make some ... (more)

E39 Pre-2001 Color-Matched Trim

... trim tends to get ''wavy'' during removal. If you want it to look good, you might want to do as I did and buy new 2001+ primered side trim. Painting existing chromeline trim (pre-2001): Front and rear trim have snap-off chrome strips, so a body shop can either paint the textured plastic as-is, or fill and smooth it prior to painting (my preferred method). It turns out very nice and new chrome ... (more)
