Fender Clean Out

Start by jacking the car up, and removing the wheel – the wheel-well baffle is hard to remove otherwise.

Then start removing the sheet metal screws that hold the splash guard and baffle. There are 4 at the front, under the guard, one isn’t shown here…

…one at the front which ties the arch piece into the bumper…

…two more up front, and another at the very top of the arch, which isn’t shown…

…three more regular screws at the back…

…and then there is a plastic nut behind this panel that must be removed…

…just carefully pull open this panel and undo the 10mm nut…

The next step is to gently remove the baffle by pushing it in (towards the strut) to unseat it from the lip of the fender – avoid removing the soft rubber seal.

Once that is done, the problem is revealed!

I put the wheel back on, and rolled the car out to the drive way where I could hose down this area. I also used a small soft brush to help dislodge the gunk.
Note that the back of this area is actually open to the under side of the car, and the door jam, so you can shoot water from the hose and fit some bristles of the brush in there to further dislodge stuff.
At this point, it’s open to debate as to whether or not one should apply some type of rust inhibitor. I did not. My plan is to check it on a yearly basis and wait until I see any signs of corrosion.

One last thing – when you get to re-installing things, you may find as I did that some of the tabs on the front of the arch piece were ripped out. I was able to work around this for now, but at some point, this piece will need to be replaced with a new one. The after-market piece that I bought for the damaged left side did not fit properly, so next time I will bite the bullet and pay the OEM cost.

E39 Rear Fender Rolling
Model : BMW, 5 - Series (E39) 1996-03 Category : Exterior - Fenders
... Two warnings I will give are: ''Where to get the roller?'' I rented the roller from Tire Rack, but it was in fairly poor condition (i.e. semi-broken) and took something like 6 months to get. You might want to check online for any rental places that might have it available, although that's pretty difficult. If you had ~$500 available, they cost about that much. Again, it's probably more ... (more)
