G3 Short shifter installation
|
|
|
-:: General Information ::-
Car: 1998 Integra RS
Installation time: ~1 hour
-:: Parts Required ::-
Quantity Part Description Part Number
1 TD Performance Products Short shifter 5671
1 White grease N/A
2 1/4" x 3/4" stainless steel bolt and nut (optional) N/A
TBD washers or bushings (optional) N/A
-:: Tools Required ::-
Hydraulic jack
Jackstands
Various 10 and 12 mm sockets/ratchets
Philips screwdriver
Slotted screwdriver
ViseGrip (optional)
-:: Installation Steps ::-
1. Raise vehicle and support on 4 jackstands or use a hoist. Allow motor to cool before working near the exhaust.
2. Remove the rear console (arm rest/parking brake cover). Two Phillips screws are located on each side of the arm rest (near) the seats, two under the
parking brake (use slotted screw driver to remove plastic cover). Slide the cover rearward, lift and remove. Raising/lowering the hand brake may help.
3. Remove astray and two Philips screws. Front panel with lighter can be pulled out, disconnect connector.
4. Remove the shift knob. Seperate stock knob from shift lever boot by lowering the boot from the shift knob. Turn knob counter clockwise to remove.
5. Remove the front console (around shifter). One Philips screw is located on each side near the foot wells. Two Philips screws are located at the toop
front under the radio/pocket. Carefully remove the front console. Raising/lowering the hand brake may help.
6. Remove rubber dust boot around shifter.
7. From under the vehicle, remove the 12 mm bolt and nut that link the shift linkage to the shifter.
8. From under the vehicle, remove the two 10 mm nuts that hold the shift lever ball holder braket in place. Most often, these bolts are rusty, and the
pressed bolt will turn. Using a ViseGrip to hold the bolt in place (bolt is accessible from the inside, near the shifter), removal of the nuts is possible.
This was required for this installation (stainless steel bolts where installed after previous short shifter was returned).
9. Slide original shifter out, from under the vehicle.
10. Remove the shift lever ball holder braket from the shift lever dust seal. Take note of orientation.
11. Remove the shift lever dust seal. Spraying the lower portion of the original shifter with WD-40 will make the removal easier. Do not rip the dust seal.
12. Clean the shift lever dust seal. All old grease should be removed.
13. Take a few minutes to compare the stock shifter and short shifter. If the bushing/ball-bearing mounting point is significantly narrower on the new unit,
verify that supplied bushings will compensate. Use of an extra bushing was required for this installation.
14. Spray the lower portion of the new shifter with WD-40 to make installation of the shift lever dust seal easier.
15. Pack the shift lever dust seal with white grease, then slip over short shifter ball.
16. Reinstall the shift lever ball holder braket on the shift lever dust seal. Place in proper orientation.
17. Slide new short shifter in, from under the vehicle. Verify that bent portion of the short shifter is pointed towards the rear of the vehicle.
18. If the ViseGrip trick was required, disgard the original bolts and 10 mm nuts and install new stainless steel bolts.
19. Slide change rod over the lower portion of the short shifter.
20. Align the shift lever ball holder braket into place. Install both nuts and tighten. A buddy makes this job much easier if new bolts are required.
21. Install original 12 mm bolt and space bushings evenly on both sides of the shifter. Install 12 mm nut and tighten. Verify that shift operation is
smooth. If there's too much play (left/right), tighten the 12 mm bolt and nut a bit more. Loosen the 12 mm bolt and nut if the shifter is too tight.
22. Verify that shifter doesn't interfere with exhaust in any gears.
23. Reinstall interior trim in reverse order. Remember to reconnect wiring to ashtray.
24. Lower the vehicle, go for a drive and relearn to shift.
-:: Installation Comments ::-
Installation of a short shifter is straight forward. Damage to the interior trim is possible. Being delicate and taking your time will reduce the odds of
damaging the interior.
Shift lengths are dramatically shorter than stock. The ball bearing in short shifter will outlast the stock bushing.
