Out the box, the BMW shifter is a nice smooth piece. Only real problem for any car enthusiast is that the throws are a bit long. Luckily for us, there is a good aftermarket out there. One of the best offerings out there is the UUC Motorwerks Short Shift Kit. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way. My first shift kit was an AutoThority short shift kit which was comprised of a piece of billet aluminum-a short shift adapter was more like it. It relocates where the lower linkage arm attaches to the bottom of the shift lever, increasing the leverage. For $99, what the hell, right? Initially it did do what it was supposed to. The shifts were very short-you were able to shift with your wrist, however, shift effort was increased greatly. It was VERY notchy. The idea of a short shift kit is to decrease the time between shifts. Well, this kind of contradicted the idea. Besides, to me, notchy does not necessarily equate to sporty. Soon enough the shifter got very sloppy within a few months with a lot of side to side motion, making the gears very vague to engage. You get what you pay for.
I ordered the UUC Evo II Short Shift Kit with all the upgrades-the Delrin Bushings (to eliminate side-to-side slop) and the Cartridge Bearing insert (to smooth the shifts more). To compliment it, I got a RKII Magnum, which is a larger shift knob with a nice amount of heft. When I got the parts, I could see they were well manufacturered-very nice pieces indeed. The UUC Evo II is also a height adjustable shifter, which is a very nice feature.
After I had it installed, I noticed that the side-to-side play was virtually eliminated with the Delrin bushings (which can be used on other shifters)-it was very tight now. The shift action was definitely more positive than a stock shifter with a nice locking sound as it engages. The length of the throw wasn't as short as my AutoThority SSK, but it was a good length. I didn't have to jam the gears in like my other SSK-it is much smoother, feeling almost like stock. Coupled with the nice big polished aluminum shift knob, this was a very nice package. Very solid. The best thing is the shift from 4th to 5th is not as far apart distance wise. I highly recommend this SSK to anyone on the market. One thing I may upgrade is the shift rod from Rogue Engineering to accompany the UUC SSK to further smooth out the shifts. I know, I know, that's heresy. Oh well.
All in all, the total cost of this upgrade came to $345. That includes the Evo II short shift kit, the Delrin Bushing upgrade, the Cartridge Bearing upgrade and the RKII Magnum shift knob.

... feel around for the ends of the selector rod, then push, pull and twist the circlips off of both ends. They aren't fun since there is very little room to get your hands in there. The pictures below were taken with the catalytic converter and driveshaft removed, it will NOT be that easy to reach the linkage on your car. The rear circlip has a tendancy to pop off and fall on top of the heat ...

... I had them install the lever when I was having some maintenance work done on the car. The typical installation time at the dealer was just about an hour. Impressions When I got the car back, I immediately noticed a 40-50% reduction in the throw of the shifter. This was absolutely fantastic. I loved that I no longer have to move my arm to shift the car, but now can change gears by moving my ...

When it won't turn any further, you should be able to to yank the lever up out of the housing.Separate the shifter stub from the horizontal shift rod. Pay close attention to the orientation of the yellow spacer washer as you remove it, as you will want to orient the new one in the same way. Mine had the beveled edge facing out. I then ...

The dealer does not have to charge that amount. One dealer near me charges sugg retail, another charges sugg retail + 50%. Hardest part of the installation is removing the nylon ball joint cup.
